The Yoga You Don’t Know About

Patanjali’s 8 Limbs of Yoga

Yoga in Sanskrit (ancient language of South Asia) means ‘union’ or ‘yoke’. Yoga is a disciplinary practice with its primary purpose to control and still the fluctuations of the mind (yoga sutra 1.2 yogas citta vrtti nirodhah).

By gaining a witness perspective and comprehending the power of the present moment, now, (yoga sutra 1.1 atha yoga anushasanam - now, the discipline of yoga), Patanjai (an ancient sage who transcribed the aphorisms of yoga which are called sutras - string) organized the basic principles and practice of yoga.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are best known for its reference to eight limbs (ashtanga) yoga which culminate into union with pure consciousness. The daily disciplinary practice of yoga (sadhana) transcends the ego and allows the witness-consciousness to discern reality clearly bringing peace in mind, body and spirit.

Yoga FAQs

  • No! The longer answer to this frequently asked question is yoga is a journey towards flexibility of mind and body. The practice of yoga is a journey of flexibility first of the mind and then body will follow. The physical postures of yoga help alleviate stress, tension and stiffness in the muscles, joints and ligaments to create more space in the body for Life Force energy (prana) to flow more effortlessly and gracefully. This usually increases vitality and health, and decreases physical pain and stiffness.

  • Our in-person offerings include one on one sessions or in person yoga retreats where we really dive into the true nature of yoga. We have found that working individually gives you a greater understanding and depth of yoga philosophy and the practical implementation of the teachings into your everyday life. Our yoga retreats are small groups so that we can also provide individualized attention to each participant.

  • Hopefully, one day you’ll have more time in your schedule to dedicate one hour a week to practice yoga to get you started. If that’s not possible, you may like to try out free yoga on Youtube at your convenience while you are at home.

  • There are a few great options that yoga can offer those who have limited mobility. There is breathwork which has been scientifically proven to help decrease physical pain, just as much as the physical practice of yoga postures.

We can also accamodate your physical needs by practicing chair yoga. This is a great way to be able to do subtle physical movement without too much strain on your body.

Another great practice is meditation. People who use meditation to help their physical healing can also radically reduce physical symptoms. Even, Dr. Joe Dispenza healed himself using meditation.
